Since the beginning of its journey as a Govt-Aided co-educational General Degree Arts College on 1st June 1982, Department of Philosophy was there. To fulfill the long standing aspirations and desire of the people of local area for a college in the name of the rebel poet Kazi Nazrul islam, who was born on 24th May ,1899,in the village Churulia of Jamuria Block in the District of Burdwan, now Paschim Bardhaman the college was established. Since the beginning the Department of Philosophy as well as all other departments were under the University of Burdwan till July 2016. Since its inception Philosophy was being taught as a subject of Pass course ( Bachelor of Arts), BA Pass. From the academic session 2016-17 onwards the College became part of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol and the Department too started teaching courses designed by the curriculum of the affiliating University ie Kazi Nazrul University. The Department has subsequently upgraded itself to a semester-based CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) . Philosophy is being taught as a subject of Programme. From the academic year 2023-24 Department of Philosophy will follow the NEP 2020 guidelines and is ready to face the challenges of the new 4 year-degree course.
➢ The primary aim of the department is to nurture and develop healthy teacher- student relation inspiring students with the vision to discover their inner potentialities in their own ways.
➢ To impart quality education in Philosophy to rural and economically weaker students, as the students hail from a corner of Asansol- aniganj coal belt rural area, where education is less and different addiction is more.
➢ To promote good physical and mental health development so that the students can establish them as a good human being in any part of the state as well as of the country.
➢ To provide a platform to the students so that they can exhibit their talent and creativity.
➢ To raise the standard of our students to global level and make them employable, so that they can be a part of good human society
✓ Our mission is not merely gathering knowledge about the world and its objects, but to promote value based education with the love for such knowledge that would help the students emerge in to a socially, morally and culturally enriched human being.
✓ The inculcation of a value system within the Department which shall reflect in the larger spheres of society.
✓ To constantly and actively integrate the Department within the eco-sphere with the idealisms of the UGC, NEP, NAAC and NIRF.
✓ To encourage students to have access to modern tools of education so that they become better citizens of the country as well as of the world.
✓ To grasp every bit of available access to modern teaching aids and methodologies so that the
students of the Department become competitive modern day learners.
Strength:
Being one of the oldest subjects in human history the Department of Philosophy has always felt integrated with the larger mainstream of higher education. The Department has been able to produce consistent good results at the University level even with the limited resources
❖ Our mission is not merely gathering knowledge about the world and its objects, but to promote

to a socially, morally and culturally enriched human being.

citizens of the country as well as of the world.
❖ To grasp every bit of available access to modern teaching aids and methodologies so that the

Weakness:
▪ The prime weakness of the Philosophy Department is that, it has only one full-time faculty member and thus is very under-staffed and even a State Aided College teacher or a guest teacher has not been engaged. Available books and journals are insufficient if new syllabus is taken under consideration.
▪ Another challenge faced by the Department is that a sizeable portion of the students enrolled, come from economically and educationally challenged backgrounds, and are even first generation learners, so expectation of guardians regarding higher education is
less. Naturally few women students are getting married during study period, as a consequence losing interesting in higher study.
▪ Due its geographical situation, it is not well communicated with the different modalities of transport, and no functioning hostel facilities are available.
